Treatment For Acromegaly

The human endocrine system is extremely complex with lots of endocrine glands secreting several different hormones which define various functionalities of human body. The disorders with endocrine system have to be evaluated and treated as early as possible for better results.

One of the commonly seen problems with the endocrine system is related to one of its glands named pituitary gland. Pituitary adenoma is a state when tumors are developed in the cells of pituitary gland. Different classifications of pituitary adenoma are there and these classifications are purely based on the size, shape and historical stains. A tumor which has a size of less than ten millimeters are termed as micro adenoma; and a tumor which has a size of more than ten millimeters can be termed as macro adenoma. Tumors of more than 10 millimeters have to be treated with a surgical procedure and tumors of less than 10 mm has to be treated with the recommendations of doctor. In some cases, a surgery will benefit the patient.

Acromegaly is another severe state of human body and it is caused due to the disorders in hormones produced by pituitary gland. This is a state of body when excess growth hormones are secreted by human body. The hypothalamus in human brain generated growth hormone-releasing hormone which causes the pituitary gland to generate growth hormones or GH. Once released, growth hormones will be circulated in blood and there after, liver generated insulin type of hormones or growth factor-1. As a matter of fact, growth factor-1 is responsible for the growth of bones and tissues of human body. When a human body reaches a state of acromegaly, the tumor produces excess growth hormones and these growth hormones won't be balanced by growth factor-1. Hence, excess growth hormones start accumulating and this eventually results in over growth of human body.

Treatment for acromegaly is absolutely compulsory, especially when mortality rates are increasingly scary due to untreated acromegaly. The primary as well as ultimate goal of treating acromegaly is to lower the concentration of growth hormones in blood. In some cases, medication will prove to be fruitful, where in some cases surgeries and radiations are considered as secondary and tertiary options respectively.

Surgical procedure can be considered as the only single guaranteed treatment where, the patient can trust beyond faith. However, constraints are applicable here as well, to cure the patient suffering from acromegaly. Tumors can be completely removed to cure the patient, only if it hasn't grown large enough to cross the primary boundaries of pituitary glands.

The patient and relatives had to undergo extensive research on what need to be done to benefit the patient. Once you decide for a surgical procedure, it is highly critical to choose the best surgeon who has great experience in transsphenoidal surgery. If the surgeon is vastly experienced, the success chances of surgery can be taken for granted, in most of the cases. For any surgeon, the challenge lies in removing the adenoma completely and taking preventive measures to avoid post-surgery complications.
